Effective July 1, 2026, significant changes to Ontario’s no-fault accident benefits regime will take effect. Policyholders will now have to opt-in for benefits that were previously standard and automatically included under all policies – From July 1, 2026, the only benefits that will continue to be mandatory and automatically included are medical and rehabilitation benefits and attendant care. This means you will now have to opt-in for the following benefits:
Income Replacement Benefits
Non-Earner Benefits
Caregiver Benefits
Educational Expenses
Visitor Expenses
Housekeeping / Home Maintenance Expenses
Damage associated with damage to clothing, glasses, hearing aids, etc.
Death Benefits
Funeral Benefits
If you are an existing customer, your policy will renew automatically with your current coverage and limits.
If you are a new customer on or after July 1, 2026, you will have to opt into the optional benefits, which prior to July 1, 2026 were standard in all policies.
It is more important than ever for Ontario drivers to review their current auto insurance policies and when the time comes, to purchase optional and increased benefits - the additional premium is nominal and can make all the difference in serious injury cases.
